With as much as around 20% of the population reported to have had shoulder pain or currently having shoulder pain, it is fair to say that it is a common problem and one that we see a lot of in clinic. In fact, having had two operations on his own shoulder, this is something that Jon knows an awful lot about…
The shoulder unlike any other joint in the body enjoys over 180 degrees of movement in multiple directions, remarkable when you really think about it but it comes at an inherent cost of comparatively little bony stability. If we take the hip as an example of a “ball and socket” joint; yes there is less movement but the ball is surrounded by the socket and so enjoys a great deal of stability directly because of the shape of the joint. The shoulder by comparison is more ball and saucer in appearance but is stabilised by the muscular group known as the “rotator cuff”.
Such a complex joint can mean that there is more than one thing that can go wrong and cause us pain. The most common structures being those of the rotator cuff, the bursae (small fluid filled sack that allows smooth movement of all the surrounding structures) or the joint capsule itself to name a few. In fact we see many people who have pain overlying their shoulders which tends to be due to issues as common as just the slouching posture that many of us adopt for hours at a time if we are sitting at a desk or using a smartphone a lot.
Ultimately whatever the underlying cause is, there is almost always a lot that we can do to help. Whether that involves postural advice or working directly on the affected tissues or mobilising the shoulder joint to help with a lack of movement we are here to help with your shoulder pain and in case he hasn’t told you already, Jon “loves a shoulder”!
